I have been making these mirrors in production for several years. They are taken from a magazine article which focused on the use of templates for production projects. Indeed, I created a template for cutting out the profile and a jig for holding the blank while you rout the mirror reccess exactly in the center. The stock should be about 5/8 or less in thickness. These are about 1/2. The wood was collected localy here in South Florida. I cut some logs from a vacant lot from an old Southern Live Oak tree. I dampened the logs and left them in a plastic bag for about 6 months creating the mold that was the catalyst for the spalting you see. I then re-sawed the logs into planks (quarter sawn). I use the few pieces that I have for special projects such as this.
